Only 100 km separate Lisbon from Peniche, which depending on the means of transport used could turn into 60-90 minutes of travel.

Bolt taxi in Portogallo

If private transport is your preferred choice for reasons of time and organization, we recommend the following services:

The second solution offered regards the classic rental car. This service is very useful if you are traveling with your personal surfing equipment, short board, long board, bodyboard. How to get from Lisbon to Peniche by bus

Finally, the last option offered within this post dedicated to the ideal transportation on how to get to Peniche from Lisbon, we talk about the buses.

  • solo traveller or couples
  • those who do not have time problems
  • those who do not need a vehicle once they arrive at their destination
  • those who wanna monitor their budget

How does bus transport work?

Let’s try to clarify this topic, offering an easy and immediate prospect. First of all the bus companies that offer the transfer service from Lisbon to Peniche are two:

  1. Rede Expressos – departure from Sete Rios station
  2. Rodo Tejo – departure from Campo Grande station

As you have probably already noticed, unfortunately there are no bus companies that offer a direct transfer from the airport of Lisbon to Peniche. In fact, to date, the only way to reach Peniche by bus is through the companies Rede Expressos and Rodo Tejo, which connect the Portuguese capital with several cities located on the Portuguese coast so loved by surf enthusiasts.

It is very important to underline that the bus departure stations are located in the city of Lisbon, let’s say in the vicinity of the historical center, they are easily reachable by local bus or metro, but you will have to use 10 to 30 minutes depending on the chosen vehicle. So be careful to calculate travel times, especially if you want to buy your ticket online and book your seat on the bus to Peniche.

How to get from Lisbon to Peniche by Rede Expressos bus

In case your choice is for Rede Expressos company, once you arrive at the airport you will have 3 options to reach Sete Rios station. They are:

  • public bus ( 705 – 744 – 783)
  • metro
  • taxi

The bus lines that connect the airport to the Sete Rios stop are 705, 744 and 783. It is important to underline that even if you choose the bus connection, this will not be direct. In fact, depending on the number chosen, you have to get off at the nearest metro station, which will then take you to your destination.

For example, by bus 705 you should stop at the metro stop: Roma – Areeiro. From here you will find the metro line that goes to Sete Rios in only 2 stops. Alternativately, by the bus 783 you will arrive until Entrecampos and from here you could finally take your bus to Peniche. The total time needed for that is equal to about 30 minutes.

There is a similar situation for the metro which unfortunately does not directly connect the airport to the Sete Rios station. Here too you have to change at least once. Although the most economical mode of transport, a single journey costs € 1.45, it is also the one that takes longer. Estimate at least 60 minutes.

Finally the taxi. Definitely the middle step is faster and more practical. It will cost you something more, about 10 €, but you will reach your destination in about 10-15 minutes at the most. Recommended option for practical people or chronic latecomers (like myself).

Rede Expressos buses depart from Sete Rios station, travel all week, Sunday and holidays included with a schedule that runs from 7.30am to 7.30pm or 10.00pm.

Rodoviaria do Tejo bus service

However, if your choice has rewarded the company Rodoviaria do Tejo, below we will try to offer an analysis very similar to the previous one. Also in this case you will have 3 different options to reach the departure station, which in this case is Campo Grande. They are:

  • public bus 783
  • metro
  • taxi

In general, reaching the Campo Grande stop from the airport is more inconvenient than in the previous case, in this case the possibilities of choice are more limited.

The most practical bus to reach the destination is the 783 which will lead you to the stop of Amoreias (5 stops). From here you will have about 12 minutes of walking to the bus stop. Total time of about 25 to 30 minutes.

As in the previous case, if you chose the metro, you will have to change the vehicle and take a very long ride. Red Metro from the airport with change at Alameda station where you will change with the green line that will take you to the Campo Grande station.

Estimate here at least 40 to 45 minutes.

In this case, the taxi is in our opinion the best solution. In less than 10 minutes you will be at your destination for a cost probably less than 10 €. It’s worth it!

Obrigado Mattia – Such a luxury to find that two bus lines travel to Peniche where we are soon arriving for the MIA Festival, and now to read your helpful comparison. In Canada we are simply not used to so much choice in public transportation.

  2. Dan

Thanks for this post Mattia! Do you know whether the Lace Festival in Peniche on 21.7.2019 has any special buses from Lisbon on Sunday?

    • mattia

Hi Dan! Thanks a lot for your comment. To be honest i don’t really know if there are special buses for this festival. I would suggest you to contact the organization of the event in order to get some more details. I tried to find more info online but I did not see anything related to that. But thanks for the tips because I am going to write something about “Lace in Peniche” very soon. Enjoy your stay in Portugal 🙂

    • mattia

Hi Courtney! I am sorry for the late answer but we were quite busy lately.

By the way the answer is: of course you can bring all your stuff with you. There is not any problem to check your surfboard bags.
