This is a great additional service that goes very well with the popular thai massage service already offered by our team. If you would like to more about osteopathy and the relation between osteopathic massages and surf, just read the valuable information contained in this article.
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a manual therapy, which aims to improve health and the recovery of injuries by treating the body as a whole using a broad range of techniques (articulation, soft tissue massage, manipulation and more). One of its main principles is that structure and function are interrelated and that to be healthy we need to have a balanced homeostasis, well functioning united body.
It means that every part of your body needs to be working for you to feel great and pain free, and it’s not only about muscles and bones but also about ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves.
As Osteopaths, we consider the body as a unit and that’s why even if you come for a bad neck, your whole body will be looked at. We are looking for the root of the problem and we don’t just focus on the symptoms. I often explain to my patients that being an osteopath is like being a detective who has to find the origin of the problem, and everyone being different, there is always a mystery to solve!
Why would you need it?
You might want a session because you’ve had a niggle in your back for ages, or that shoulder that has never been the same since an old injury, or maybe you just hurt yourself getting back into the water after so many months not exercising.
The majority of surfing injuries are low back pain and neck pain due to the repetition of extension movement when paddling. Paddling itself can provoke shoulder joints and arm pain. Upper back tension caused by the position on the board and paddling can sometimes lead to shoulder pain or even headaches. Once on your board, the twisting motion of surfing can cause hip, knee and ankle joint injuries.
If you are pain free, maybe you could use your time at Boa Onda Guesthouse to get a full body check up session, I will examine your whole body and give you a general treatment to make you feel even better than you thought possible, correct any tension I find. It’s like bringing your car to the garage for an MOT before anything breaks.
How is a session like?
Sessions last up to an hour, unless I have seen you before in which case it is about 35- 45 min.
A session starts with the case history, which is the first part of my detective work, I ask you plenty of questions about the problem, previous injuries and medical history so I get a clear idea of what you have been putting your body through! That part might be boring for you but it is essential for me to ask those questions to make sure that you are safe to treat.
Then, I will get you to undress into your underwear (or swimwear, whatever you are more comfortable with as long as I can see your spine) so I can have a thorough examination of your whole body without missing anything (but if you really don’t feel comfortable with the idea of undressing, bring a pair of shorts or leggings and a t-shirt).
After the examination, we will start the treatment using different types of techniques from soft tissue massage, articulation, and manipulation to functional techniques like cranial osteopathy as appropriate.
At the end of the session, I will show you some exercises to do and will share any advice to make your life easier.
What can Osteopathy help?

- Arthritic pain
- general, chronic and acute back pain
- generalized aches and pain

- muscles spasms
- elbow pain/shoulder Pain

Osteopathy and Surfing
Surfing is a great sport, which involves a diverse range of movements, asking much of the body, demanding skill and training and it is all carried out in an environment that is totally unpredictable.
Therefore, sometimes you can get injured but good planning (and techniques) minimizes the chance of injury along with a good osteopathic treatment to manage injuries and improve your posture while surfing.

About the osteopath?
Born and raised in France, I went to study Osteopathy at the ESO in England when I was 18. After graduating, I worked in busy clinics in England for 4 years until I realized I needed to explore a bit more of the world. I travelled, volunteered and worked as an osteopath and yoga teacher in Asia and New Zealand for one year. Once I got back to Europe I decided to come and experience the life in Portugal.
